Camp KD | Week 1 June 5-9 Kennedy-Douglas Center for the Arts, Florence  Camp KD is an annual summer camp held at the Kennedy-Douglass Center for the Arts. Young Learners Series: Mary Golda RossJune 10thFlorence Indian Mound MuseumJoin us on Saturday, June 10th at 10 for a program and activity about Cherokee engineer Mary Golda Ross. Mary was born in 1908 and is the great-great granddaughter of Principal Chief John Ross. Mary graduated college with a mathematics degree and started studying astronomy while earning her master's degree.  Ross worked for the Lockheed Aircraft Corporation during World War II and helped to develop a new fighter plane.  When the space race began, Ross became the first woman engineer among a team of 40 engineers to work on a top-secret program. Summer Mini Twil Camp June 12th- 14th Florence City Coliseum Fun 3 Day Mini Camp for students ages 3-12 who want to give twirling a try or continue learning new skills. Camp will be divided into two groups with our younger twirlers participating in a fun princess camp with dress up days and a routine set to Disney music. Older students will take part in the Just Twirl Camp learning fun tricks, basics and a group routine. No twirling experience required, but twirlers will need to provide their own batons. Ritz Theatre Camp (3rd-6th Grade) – Cycle 1June 12th- 16thThe Ritz Theatre The Ritz Theatre Summer Camp is instructed by Jaleesa Escott and administered by the Tennessee Valley Art Association. Jaleesa Escott is a graduate of the University of North Alabama. While there, she participated in various groups such as UNA's vocal jazz and opera/musical theatre program. She attained both her undergraduate and master's degree in music education from UNA. Miss Escott has worked in her field for the past five years and directed several shows throughout her career, including Honk, A Charlie Brown Christmas, and The Wizard of Oz. Junior Archaeology Camp June 12th- 16th Florence Arts and Museums The camp will introduce students to the concepts of archaeology through hands-on investigation and research. Students will learn how to research, plan, excavate, and process artifacts at Pope's Tavern Museum. Junior Art Camp (3rd-6th Grade) July 10th- 14th Tennessee Valley Museum of ArtStudents will develop fundamental skills while exploring multiple mediums such through engaging art experiences. The Junior Artist sessions will be led by veteran artists & art instructors. The instructors will include Amita Bhakta, Provie Musso, Cynthia Infanger, and others. Each instructor is accompanied by assistants to allow as much direct contact with the students as possible. Basic Oil Painting With Martha Carpenter July 20th- 22nd Tennessee Valley Museum of Art Working from a still-life, the instructor will open class with a demonstration using a limited palette of the 3 primary colors, red, yellow and blue, supplemented by white. Emphasis will be on the "alla prima" painting technique. Alla prima is Italian for "at first attempt." It is a painting technique done in one layer in one sitting. Lori Putnam: Far From Home

PORTALS: Collaborative Member Artist Exhibition

PORTALS is an interactive, organically evolving installation at Tennessee Valley Museum of Art. Doors can represent entrances, beginnings, transitions, gateways, thresholds, boundaries, or endings. Tennessee Valley Art Association member artists are invited to interpret these neutral doors (portals) as works of art. Artists can bring materials into the museum and paint, puncture, staple, découpage, etc. to their hearts' content. The exhibition will evolve through June 30. Each door will be auctioned off at the annual artist members exhibition, ARTWORKS, at the end of Summer.

The Miracle Worker Play
